SUMMARY:Tactical Domain-Driven Design with Java & Spring
DESCRIPTION:The building blocks of tactical Domain-Driven Design (DDD) defi
ne atomic design concepts for domain models. They define semantics\, rules
\, and guide developers on how to structure code to develop complex busine
ss logic. However\, the implementation of those in Java usually leads to s
ome technical challenges. In this workshop\, we look at different approache
s and tools that support developers building rich domain models in Java: t
he jMolecules library\, that allows expressing DDD concepts in code and th
at provides integration with many ubiquitous technologies like Spring\, Ja
ckson and various persistence technologies. For Spring Boot applications\,
the Spring Modulith project supports developers to implement business mod
ules\, the interaction among them using events\, their testability and doc
 umenting them.\nSpeakers: Oliver Drotbohm\nTrack: Architecture

SUMMARY:No Pandas Were Harmed: Elegant and Efficient Data Analytics with Po
 lars
DESCRIPTION:Data analytics doesn&#39\;t have to be slow or cumbersome. With
Polars\, a next-generation DataFrame library built for performance and si
mplicity\, you can process massive datasets faster than ever. In this hand
s-on workshop\, you will discover how to leverage Polars to support your d
ata workflows from the fundamentals to the more advanced analytics scenari
os.In the first part of the workshop\, we will introduce Polars as the mod
ern library for data analytics in Python\, covering its data model\, engin
e design\, and how it compares to other analytics tools like Pandas\, whic
h is effective for smaller datasets\, and Apache Spark\, which is horizont
ally scalable but inefficient for smaller datasets because of the overhead
of the distributed infrastructure. The second part will dive into a real-
world dataset of NYC taxi trips\, containing hundreds of millions of rows.
We will walk through efficient data ingestion and cleaning\, and then exp
lore how to perform lightning-fast queries and groupings directly in a not
ebook environment. You will also learn how to visualize your findings with
simple yet powerful plotting techniques.Finally\, we will tackle more com
plex and realistic analytics scenarios\, such as identifying the top-earni
ng drivers over a specific time window\, and visualizing their most profit
able trips and neighborhoods. Through these scenarios\, we will showcase h
ow Polars empowers you to move seamlessly from raw data to meaningful insi
 ghts.\nSpeakers: Andrea Mocci\, Jesper Findahl\, Marco D'Ambros\nTrack: Da

SUMMARY:From LLM orchestration to autonomous agents: Agentic AI patterns wi
 th LangChain4j
DESCRIPTION:The last few months have seen the rapid evolution of LLMs from
passive completion engines\, only good for generic chatbots\, to component
s of a more complex\, programmatically defined\, workflow and finally into
active and autonomous elements capable of reasoning\, planning\, and taki
ng actions. But moving from basic prompt engineering to truly autonomous sy
stems requires a new class of design patterns and possibly a framework all
owing to implement those patterns and put them at work in a convenient and
effortless way.In this workshop\, we will explore the architecture and im
plementation of agentic AI using LangChain4j\, a Java-native framework for
building LLM-powered applications. You’ll learn how to move beyond the
plain usage of a standalone LLM to design intelligent\, modular agents cap
able of dynamic decision-making\, memory retention\, tool usage\, RAG\, MC
 P and A2A integration and multi-step goal execution.After having covered t
he core concepts of agentic AI\, we will guide you in incrementally buildi
ng and testing an agentic system from scratch using LangChain4j and Quarku
s\, backed by real-world examples and live coding. Whether you&#39\;re exp
loring agentic AI for task automation\, intelligent assistants\, or decisi

chitectural understanding to build robust and maintainable autonomous agen
ts in Java.\nSpeakers: Mario Fusco\, Kevin Dubois\nTrack: Machine Learning

SUMMARY:The Past\, Present and Future of Programming Languages
DESCRIPTION:Programming languages are a halfway house between the metal and
the mind\, a bridge between the world of circuits and the world of applic
ations\, the engineered and the social. Programming languages are the medi
um through which developers codify systems and fragments. In each programm
ing language is embedded a philosophy (or many) of how to think about code
\, how to organise thoughts\, how to design. Programming languages also de
 fine skillsets\, ecosystems\, jobs\, loyalties and communities.When we thi
nk of software and technology we often think in terms of progress and rapi
d change. Programming languages\, however\, typically move at a far slower
pace. Mainstream languages are still embracing ideas that are decades old
. Constructs that developers welcome as new to their language of choice ar
e often older than the developers themselves. And over all this hangs the
question\, what of the future? How will current trends\, from FOSS to LLMs
\, shape programming languages and their use? In this talk\, we will take
a tour of the past\, present and future of programming languages.\nSpeaker

SUMMARY:Securing RAG Pipelines with Fine Grained Authorization
DESCRIPTION:Building enterprise-ready AI requires ensuring users can only a
ugment prompts with data they&#39\;re authorized to access. Relationship-b
ased access control (ReBAC) is particularly well-suited for fine-grained a
uthorization in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) because it makes deci
sions based on relationships between objects\, offering more precise contr
ol compared to traditional models like RBAC and ABAC. This talk covers how
ReBAC systems can safeguard sensitive data in RAG pipelines. We&#39\;ll s
tart with why Authorization is critical for RAG pipelines\, and how Google
Zanzibar achieves this with ReBAC. We&#39\;ll then illustrate how pre-fil
tering vector database queries with a list of authorized object IDs can im
prove efficiency &amp\; security. The talk will also include a demo implem
enting fine-grained authorization for RAG using Pinecone\, Langchain\, Ope

SUMMARY:Distributed Systems - What Can Go Wrong and How to Get It Right
DESCRIPTION:Building distributed systems is challenging due to their comple
xity\, scale\, and unpredictability. Common strategies to increase perform
ance and reliability are queues\, retries\, caches and more. But be aware!
Naively implemented optimizations have often the very much opposite effec
t to what you expect. While they can not only prevent your system from wor
king they can even affect your recovery process\, which is even worse. In t
his session we will explore why you cannot simply add a retry here\, a que
ue there and have a highly performant and reliable system. We will dive de

SUMMARY:Friendly Borders: Graph algorithms reveal Eurovision voting pattern
 s
DESCRIPTION:Graphs offer a powerful tool for uncovering relationships and h
idden patterns between entities. This presentation provides an introductio
n to graph theory\, and demonstrates how graphs are applied across various
business domains - from social network analysis and recommendation system
s to fraud detection and supply chain optimization. Through an overview of
core concepts and algorithmic approaches\, the goal is to show how graphs
can reveal underlying structures in complex systems. As a real-world case
study\, the presentation focuses on Eurovision voting - an area long suspe
cted of regional bias and neighbourly favoritism. Using graph-based analys
is and community detection techniques\, we explore voting patterns between
countries to better understand how geography\, history\, and politics inf
luence the distribution of points. Through visualizations and data-driven
insights\, the talk demonstrates how graph theory uncovers hidden alliance

SUMMARY:Domain-centric? Why Hexagonal and Onion Architecture Are Answers to
The Wrong Question – And What To Ask Instead
DESCRIPTION:To separate technical from domain code\, architectural approach
es like Hexagonal or Onion Architecture are currently all the rage. Howeve
r\, discussions about their semantic details and their mapping to the sour
ce code structure of software projects are at least equally ubiquitous. How
much abstraction and mapping between architectural concepts is needed? Is
persistence metadata in the domain model heresy? Above all: what is the a
ctual goal of the exercise\, and: does it have to be so complicated? We add
ress these and other questions in a theoretical overview and by looking at

SUMMARY:Technical Enshittification: Why Everything in IT is Horrible Right
Now and How to Fix It
DESCRIPTION:Software is a mess. Everything feels bloated and sluggish. Bugs
pile up. Updates break more than they fix. Even basic apps demand absurd
amounts of computing power. And innovation? If you count shuffling UI elem
ents or slapping a ChatGPT button onto everything\, sure. The problem isn
’t bad engineers. It’s that building software has turned into an obsta
cle course. Every step—writing\, reviewing\, deploying—is buried under
layers of tools\, approvals\, and abstractions. A simple change takes wee
ks. We spend more time wrangling complexity than shipping code. No wonder
quality is tanking\, and real progress feels nonexistent. So how did we get
here? More importantly\, how do we stop making it worse? Fixing the Googl
es and Metas of the world might be out of reach\, but your projects don’
t have to follow the same path. This talk is about cutting through the mes

DESCRIPTION:The hype of AI Agents is in full swing\, with Anthropic&#39\;s
Model Context Protocol (MCP) being the highly popular\, de facto standard
to connect agents with external tools to access files\, networks\, and API
 s. Here\, unfortunately\, security has been left once again as an aftertho

SUMMARY:Visualizing robot minds\, and other fun stuff
DESCRIPTION:During experiments in autonomous robotics\, researchers collect
a lot of data about what the robot sees\, what it interprets\, what it th
inks and what it plans to do. In order to makes sense of these data and co
rrectly interpret the results of the experiments\, one often has to come u
p with clever ways to visualize these data. The resulting images and anima
tions are often insightful\, occasionally fun and maybe also beautiful (at
least for the eyes of nerds). This talk goes through several such example
s\, covering recent research topics in autonomous robotics that took place

DESCRIPTION:DescriptionUrban mobility is one of the most complex challenges
modern cities face. What if we could simulate an entire city in real time
\, testing new policies or infrastructure changes before applying them in
the real world? We’ll present a Lugano-based innovation project that buil

Starting from simple webapp built on OpenStreetMap (OSM)\, we evolved towa

Urban Mobility) engine and visualized in Godot Engine.Through a combinati
on of C# logic and Libsumo bindings\, our system allows cities to explore
 “what-if” scenarios — understanding\, visualizing\, and optimizing m

SUMMARY:Bug fixed\, now what?
DESCRIPTION:When a bug is fixed\, how can we make sure it will not be re-in

\, a test that fails in the presence of the bug and passes in its absence.
However\, regression tests are frequently ommited by the developers\, who
tend to submit the patch alone. How can AI automation help developers it th

in its absence. We use a combination of LLMs and traditional\, search-based

three Python repositories (Javascript and Rust will be soon also supported

SUMMARY:Spec-Driven Development with AI Agents: From High-Level Requirement
 s to Working Software
DESCRIPTION:AI coding agents are powerful\, but they often feel unpredictab
le. Without structure\, they can jump into implementation\, miss requireme
nts\, or generate code you can’t easily track. Spec-driven development i
s a practical approach that brings order to this process. The method is sim
ple: start with clear\, high-level requirements\, refine them into a detai
led development plan\, then break that plan into a task list with trackabl
e steps. The AI agent works from these artifacts—requirements.md\, plan.
md\, and tasks.md—instead of ad-hoc prompts. Each step becomes explicit\
 , reviewable\, and repeatable.In this talk\, I’ll show how to apply spec
-driven development and explain my intuition for this approach. We’ll wa
lk through an example: documenting requirements\, generating a plan\, crea
ting tasks\, and guiding the AI through execution one step at a time. Alon
 g the way\, you’ll see techniques for controlling workflow\, reviewing c
hanges\, and avoiding “black box” code generation. If you’ve tried co
ding with AI tools but found them chaotic\, this session will give you a f
ramework to make them reliable partners.\nSpeakers: Anton Arhipov\nTrack:

SUMMARY:The Future of Angular: Faster\, Lighter\, Stronger
DESCRIPTION:Angular&#39\;s dependence on ngZone has long offered a simple m
ethod of handling change detection. But performances have frequently been
sacrificed in the process. Applications may be slowed down by needless re-
renders and a lack of control over state changes. These difficulties have
paved the way towards the most recent changes in the Angular world. The lat

more fine-grained lazy loading\, and enhanced efficiency. Those changes ar

is no longer writing syntax—it is defining intent. This evolution bring
s Spec-Driven Development (SDD) back into the spotlight\, not as a bureauc
ratic documentation step\, but as the primary interface for software creat
ion.In this panel\, we explore the reality of building software when you&#
39\;re pair programming with an LLM. We will discuss the architectural imp
lications of moving from imperative coding to declarative specifications.
How do we define unambiguous requirements for non-deterministic agents? Do
es &quot\;prompt engineering&quot\; evolve into rigorous system design? Jo
in us to discover if the Spec is truly the new Source of Truth\, or just a
nother layer of abstraction to maintain in a world where code is becoming
 a commodity.\nSpeakers: Anton Arhipov\, Baruch Sadogursky\, Stefano Maestr

SUMMARY:Teaching Exotic Programming Languages to Large Language Models
DESCRIPTION:Imagine asking a computer to build an entire app from scratch a
nd it does\, instantly\, just by understanding your words. That is not sci
ence fiction anymore. Large Language Models (LLMs) are reshaping how we wr
ite software\, aiding developers and even non-developers alike in crafting
code with unprecedented ease. But there is a catch. These models are fluen
t in the world&#39\;s most popular programming languages\, like Python or
Java\, and struggle when they face the dialects of industry: the in-house
programming languages companies build for their own unique problems. LLMs
often have little to no training knowledge of these languages\, which make
s it difficult for them to assist in these specialized domains. For this r
eason\, in-house programming languages are perceived as exotic by LLMs.In
this talk\, I will share my experience in teaching new and exotic programm
ing languages to LLMs. I will show the challenges we faced during the proc
ess and how current techniques like retrieval-augmented generation\, few-s
hot learning\, and fine-tuning open-weight models performed in this contex
 t. Finally\, I will share the &quot\;secret recipe&quot\; we used to succe
ssfully teach these languages to LLMs\, enabling them to assist in coding
tasks that were previously out of reach.\nSpeakers: Alessandro Giagnorio\n

SUMMARY:Agentic AI Patterns
DESCRIPTION:There is no universally agreed definition of what an AI agent i
 s. In practice though\, several patterns are emerging. These patterns demo
nstrate the coordination and integration of multiple AI services to build
sophisticated Agentic AI systems capable of handling intricate tasks. These
Agentic Systems architectures can be grouped in 2 main categories: workfl
ows\, where LLMs and tools are orchestrated through predefined code paths\
, and autonomous agents\, where LLMs dynamically direct their own processe
s and tool usage\, maintaining control over how they execute tasks. The goa
l of this talk is to give a theoretical overview of Agentic AI in general
and these patterns in particular. We will discuss their differences and ra
nge of applicability and show with practical examples how they can be easi
ly implemented and tested. We’ll use Quarkus and its LangChain4j extensi
on\, but the concepts are universal.\nSpeakers: Kevin Dubois\nTrack: Machi

SUMMARY:Reactive ❤️ Loom: A Forbidden Love Story
DESCRIPTION:For years\, the Java community has been told that Project Loom
would kill reactive programming — that blocking and async were destined
to be enemies. But what if that story was wrong? In this talk\, we’ll exp
lore what happens when these two worlds actually fall in love. Drawing fro
 m real-world work inside the Quarkus\, Vert.x\, Netty\, and HotSpot teams\
, we’ll see how a custom Loom scheduler built on top of Netty brings tog
ether the performance of event-driven I/O and the simplicity of virtual-th
 read-friendly blocking APIs.This isn’t a theoretical “what if”: it
’s a data-driven exploration born from experiments and collaborations be
tween IBM\, Oracle Labs\, Oracle and Apple engineering teams. You’ll see
how this approach reshapes how we think about async\, concurrency\, and s
cheduling — and why some of the long-held assumptions about “reactive
vs blocking” simply don’t hold up when measured scientifically.Along t
he way\, we’ll dissect:How the Loom scheduler and virtual threads work u
nder the hood. What happens when you run them over a Netty corePerformance
implications and trade-offs measured empirically.State of art of similar p
atterns from other languages (c++\, go\, ...)Why developers should challen
ge inherited dogmas and base design choices on data\, not folkloreThis tal
 k is a technical love story\, but also a call to reason: Measure\, Don’t
Guess. Because sometimes\, the forbidden relationships are the ones that
can move the platform forward.\nSpeakers: Francesco Nigro\nTrack: Java

SUMMARY:Behavioral Software Engineering
DESCRIPTION:According to the traditional economic theory\, markets are full
y efficient and humans operate in them in a rational way. In the late 70s
Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky started disproving this efficient markets
hypothesis\, contrasting the consistently logical Homo Economicus (Econ)
they depicted\, with the more realistic Human who takes decisions based on
his questionable points of view. Doing so they gave birth to the study of
the psychological factors involved in the making of these decisions\, cal
led Behavioral Economics. The same flawed reasoning also impacts other fiel
ds like software engineering: we cannot behave as cold Econ when spending
or investing our money\, or as rational Engeen when coding. We are humans
and this inevitably influences our choices. The anchoring effect and the av
ailability bias affect how we benchmark and evaluate the performances of o
ur programs. The pro-innovation and bandwagon biases drive our technical d
ecisions\, making us to blindly follow hypes and gurus. The not-invented-h
ere syndrome pushes us to create homemade tools instead of using de-facto
standards. The framing effect makes us solving the same problem in differe
nt ways\, depending on how it is presented.During this talk we will go thr
ough these and other heuristics and shortcuts used by our brain\, as found
by behavioral economists in almost 50 years of research\, and examine the
m in the context of software engineering\, discussing their consequences o
n the quality of our work.\nSpeakers: Mario Fusco\nTrack: People & Culture
